Repton Prep and Repton School, Derbyshire

28 May 2026

We recently spent a really useful morning visiting both Repton Prep and Repton School in Derbyshire, giving us a chance to see the full Repton journey from the early years through to Sixth Form.

Repton Prep

Repton Prep, for children aged 3 to 13, has a lovely sense of space and energy, with plenty of opportunity for children to be busy, curious and active. What came through clearly was the balance between childhood, independence and preparation for the next stage. It feels like a school where children are encouraged to get stuck in, try things, build confidence and enjoy the breadth of what is on offer.

Boarding is part of the Prep offer too, with options that can help children grow in confidence and independence before moving on to senior school. For some families, that gradual introduction to boarding can be a very helpful stepping stone.

Repton School

Later that morning, we visited Repton School, for pupils aged 13 to 18. The Senior School sits right in the heart of Repton village, surrounded by historic buildings and beautiful Derbyshire countryside. It is one of those settings that really stays with you. There is a strong sense of heritage, but the school also feels warm, energetic and very much alive.

A huge thank you to James Wilton for showing us around and for giving us so much time to understand Repton properly.

Academics, sport and co-curricular life

Repton School offers impressive breadth, academically, in sport and across the co-curricular. The sport is clearly a significant part of school life, but the arts, music, drama and wider opportunities also felt very much part of the picture. What we liked was the sense that pupils are encouraged to make the most of their time there, rather than being pushed into one narrow version of success.

Boarding and community

Boarding is central to the Senior School experience, with a strong House system and a real sense of community. This is an important part of understanding Repton. It is not simply about facilities or results, but about the rhythm of school life, the friendships formed and the support around each pupil.

Our View

What stood out across both schools was the sense of a coherent educational journey. Repton Prep gives children space to grow, explore and develop confidence, while Repton School offers the breadth, structure and ambition of a senior boarding school with a strong all-round offer.

For families considering Derbyshire schools, Repton is certainly one to understand properly. It will suit children who enjoy a busy, full school life, with plenty of opportunity across academics, sport, boarding and the co-curricular, all within a setting that feels distinctive and rooted in its community.

A thoroughly enjoyable and very informative visit.

As ever, the important thing is finding the right fit for your child. If you are considering UK boarding schools, or weighing up prep and senior school options, do get in touch and we would be very happy to talk it through.
