Welcome and First Impressions
King’s Bruton is a co-educational day and boarding school set in the heart of Bruton and surrounded by rolling Somerset countryside. Before half-term, we had the pleasure of visiting the school, and from the outset the atmosphere felt warm and purposeful, with a strong sense of community and care for the pupils.
School Setting and Community
As a co-educational day and boarding school for around 350 pupils aged 13–18, King’s Bruton benefits from a relatively small size. Importantly, this allows for a strong sense of community and close relationships between pupils and staff. As a result, the school feels personal, supportive, and well connected.
Leadership and Vision
During our visit, we were warmly welcomed by Matt Radley, Head, along with Daniel Cupit, Deputy Head (Academic), and Gilly Bunday in Admissions. Having joined as Head in September, Matt brings fresh energy and genuine warmth to the role. Notably, he personally leads many school tours, giving families direct insight into his vision. His commitment to pupil welfare, alongside academic and personal development, is already shaping a positive new chapter for King’s Bruton.
Academic Approach and Support
Academically, the school offers a balanced and personalised approach. Pupils benefit from small-group teaching, subject clinics, and strong individual support, all underpinned by excellent pastoral care. In addition, King’s Bruton provides a broad range of GCSE, A Level, and BTEC pathways, allowing pupils to follow routes that suit their strengths and interests.
Music, Arts, and Creativity
Creativity plays a central role in school life. Music, drama, and the arts are particularly strong, centred around the Queen Elizabeth Music School, which offers impressive rehearsal, recording, and percussion facilities. Alongside this, pupils take part in regular productions, creative workshops, and external collaborations, including links with Hauser & Wirth. Together, these opportunities encourage confidence and self-expression.
Co-Curricular Life and Sport
Pupils enjoy a rich co-curricular life, with over 70 weekly activities ranging from CCF and Duke of Edinburgh to motorsport, debating, Zumba, photography, and design. Sport is taken seriously and remains a clear strength of the school. In particular, hockey attracts pupils to King’s Bruton because of its coaching quality and strong track record.
Boarding Life
Boarding sits at the heart of the community and feels warm, inclusive, and well structured. The routine includes Saturday morning lessons, afternoon sport for all, and a full weekend programme of trips and activities. As a result, boarders benefit from a balanced rhythm that supports both achievement and wellbeing.
Final Reflections
Overall, King’s Bruton offers an impressively rounded education within a small-school environment. What stood out most was the school’s warmth, strong pastoral foundations, and the breadth of opportunity available to every pupil.
