It was lovely to be back at Canford School in Dorset, a school we have visited before, but one we are always delighted to return to.
A warm welcome back
Linda and I were made so welcome by Chris Wheeler, Head, Cesca Burney, Head of Admissions, and Claire Vandvik, who works in Admissions and is also a Houseparent. We really appreciated the time they gave us and the chance to hear more about life at Canford now.
Canford is hard not to be impressed by on arrival. The setting is quite something, with its historic buildings and beautiful grounds. Yet what always stands out is that it does not feel grand or remote once you are inside the school. It feels warm, busy and very grounded.
Chris Wheeler’s first year
It was fascinating to hear more about Chris Wheeler’s first year at the helm and the direction of travel for Canford.
There is clearly a great deal happening, but the school still feels very much itself. It is moving forward, with some exciting developments underway, but without losing the grounded feel that has always struck us when visiting.
The new Sixth Form hub
One of the real standouts from our visit was the new Sixth Form hub.
It is a hugely impressive space and a wonderful addition for senior pupils. What struck us most was how thoughtfully it has been designed. The architecture sits very comfortably alongside the existing historic buildings, while giving Sixth Form pupils a more grown-up space for study, support and time together.
It feels like a very positive step between school and university life.
Our pupil guides
A real highlight of the morning was being shown around by two wonderful pupils.
They were an absolute delight to chat to, but more importantly, they clearly loved their school. They spoke about Canford with warmth, ease and honesty, which always says a great deal.
Good pupil guides can tell you far more about a school than any prospectus ever could.
Boarding and community
We also had a useful conversation about boarding, and particularly about what makes weekend boarding work well.
As former overseas boarding parents ourselves, we know that good boarding is about far more than how many pupils are on site on a Saturday night. It is about the quality of the community, the energy of the house teams and the sense that pupils are properly known and looked after.
Canford’s boarding culture feels central to the school. There is a strong sense of house identity and community, but also plenty going on across the wider school. For families considering full boarding, this is an important part of understanding whether a school will be the right fit.
Our view
Canford School has a great deal going on, academically, pastorally and across the co-curricular. Sport, music, drama, outdoor life and community all feel very much part of the experience.
What we liked most was that, despite the scale of the site and the impressive facilities, Canford still feels grounded. The pupils we met were natural, articulate and unshowy. There was a warmth to the place which really came through.
For families considering UK boarding schools, Canford is certainly one to understand properly. It will suit children who want a busy, full school life, with strong boarding, breadth of opportunity and a community that feels purposeful but not overbearing.
A super morning, and very lovely to be invited back.
