Welcome and First Impressions
Recently, our school visits took us to Benenden School, where Head, Rachel Bailey, Liz Reading, and the wider team welcomed us warmly. From the outset, their openness and pride in the school set a positive tone for the visit.
Founded in 1923, Benenden operates as an independent boarding and day school for around 560 girls aged 11–18. Set within 250 acres of Kent countryside, the school offers a peaceful rural environment. At the same time, it remains highly accessible, with direct rail links placing it around one hour from London and 50 minutes from Gatwick Airport. More recently, the school celebrated its Centenary and continues to balance tradition with a modern, forward-looking approach.
Benenden’s Complete Education
In particular, Benenden is renowned for its Complete Education, which combines academic ambition with exceptional pastoral care and a rich co-curricular offering. Across the campus, facilities are both impressive and thoughtfully designed. For example, pupils benefit from a state-of-the-art Science Centre, a professional-standard music school and recital hall, and the striking 800-seat Centenary Hall.
Facilities and Co-Curricular Opportunities
Sport plays a central role in school life. Alongside lacrosse, netball, hockey, cricket, and tennis, pupils can choose from more than 100 activities. These range from art, drama, engineering, STEM, and eSports to the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). Notably, Benenden is one of the few girls’ schools in the UK to run a CCF contingent, giving pupils the opportunity to develop personal responsibility, leadership, and self-discipline through a structured, military approach.
Sixth Form at Benenden
The Sixth Form, known as Founders, offers extensive leadership opportunities and a number of distinctive programmes. These include the Professional Skills Programme and the Enterprise Challenge, both designed to prepare students for life beyond school. As a result, many girls progress to leading universities in the UK and overseas.
Boarding Life and Community
Boarding remains at the heart of the Benenden community. Importantly, day pupils are fully integrated into house life, creating a cohesive and inclusive environment. During our visit, we were particularly struck by the close-knit, family feel within the boarding houses and the strength of relationships across the school. The emphasis on developing independence, confidence, compassion, and a strong sense of belonging was evident throughout.
Outcomes and Academic Results
Benenden’s reputation has been further recognised through its recent success in the 2025 Muddy Awards, where it won the ‘Awesome Sixth Form’ category. This reflects the school’s continued commitment to innovation, personal development, and preparation for life beyond school. Academic results reinforce this picture. In 2025, 31% of A Level grades were A*, 68% were A/A*, and 88% were A–B*.
Final Reflections
Overall, Benenden remains a traditional full boarding school at heart, yet one firmly in step with the modern world — a thriving and compelling choice for bright, well-rounded girls.
