Earlier this September, Linda and I were delighted to be invited by Stamford School to attend the Burghley Horse Trials and to spend time exploring the school’s beautiful town-centre campuses in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
Leadership and Vision at Stamford School
It was a pleasure to meet Chris Seal, who joined as Head this term. Since then, he has been guiding Stamford School through a period of growth and renewed ambition, building on the strong foundations already in place.
We are also grateful to Phil Gilchrist, Alex Kennedy, and the wider team for their warm welcome, a superb lunch at Burghley, and an excellent tour of the school. Throughout our visit, it was clear that Stamford’s strong community spirit, clear sense of purpose, and pride in its heritage remain firmly in place.
About Stamford School
Founded in 1532, Stamford is one of England’s historic independent day and boarding schools, educating pupils aged 11–18. Today, as a fully co-educational school, it offers an environment in which boys and girls learn, grow, and thrive together.
Facilities and Campus Life
Across its campuses – St Paul’s, St Martin’s (the impressive Sixth Form site), and the Junior School – Stamford School blends tradition with modern excellence. This balance is particularly evident in the breadth of opportunities available beyond the classroom.
Over the last five years, Stamford School has invested more than £6 million in the development of its sports facilities, ensuring outstanding provision across all three campuses. Pupils benefit from modern gyms, extensive playing fields, and specialist courts, supporting both participation and performance. High-quality coaching, including staff with international experience, enables pupils of all abilities to develop their skills, confidence, and enjoyment of sport.
Curriculum and Qualifications
Academically, the curriculum is forward-looking, with both A Level and BTEC pathways. Currently, this includes a BTEC in Agriculture. From September 2026, Stamford will also offer a Level 3 BTEC in Engineering, making it the only school in the area to provide this qualification.
Co-curricular Opportunities and Pastoral Care
Beyond the classroom, life at Stamford is vibrant and well-rounded. Pupils benefit from exceptional opportunities in sport, music, drama, and the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) — one of the largest contingents in the UK.
Boarding, pastoral care, and wellbeing sit at the heart of the school’s ethos, creating a supportive community where every pupil is known, valued, and encouraged to succeed.

In recent years, Stamford School has undergone notable change, including the unification of its schools and the move to full co-education. While the pace of change has been significant, the school is now moving forward with purpose and confidence. Importantly, the values, community spirit, and educational quality that have long defined Stamford remain firmly in place, and the school continues to offer a supportive environment in which young people can flourish.
